１７４４年、エジンバラの町Leith（リース）に存在した５ホールのLeith Linksに世界初のゴルフ倶楽部『Gentlemen Golfers of Leith』がキャプテンのJohn Rattray（ジョン・ラタリー）さんにより設立され、同時に世界初のルール『１３ Rules of Golf』が決められました。
この出来事はゴルフの歴史において大きな意義のあるものでした。
世界初の会員制倶楽部とルールの誕生から２８０余年を経て、現在の２０９ヵ国，３２，０００カ所以上あるゴルフコースのほぼ全てに倶楽部が設立され、世界統一のルールでゴルフが楽しまれているのです。

Original 13 Rules of Golf
～Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf～
- You must Tee your Ball，within a Club’s length of the Hole.
当時の『Tee』は１打目を打つ『位置』の事を言います。
ゲームのスタートはコース内のいずれかのホールのカップ（穴）を選択し、そのカップから１クラブレングス以内にボールを置いて第１打目を放つということです。以下、訳してみてください。 - Your Tee must be upon the Ground.
- You are not to change the Ball which you Strike off the tee.
- You are not to remove，Stones，Bones or any Break Chub for the sake of playing your Ball，Except upon the fair Green & that only within a Club’s length of your Ball.
- If your Ball come among Water，or any watery filth，you are at liberty to take out your Ball & bringing it behind the hazard and Teeing it，you may play it with any Club and allow your Adversary a Stroke for so getting out your Ball.
- If your Balls be found anywhere touching one another，You are to lift the first Ball，till you play the last.
- At Holing，you are to play your Ball honestly for the Hole，and not to play upon your Adversary’s Ball，not lying in your way to the Hole.
- If you should lose your Boll，by its being taken up，or in any other way you are to go back to the Spot，where you struck last，＆ drop another Ball、And allow your adversary a Stroke for your misfortune.
- No man at Holing his Ball，is to be allowed to mark to the Hole with his Club or anything else.
- If a Ball be stop’d by any person，Horse，Dog，or anything else，The Ball so stop’d must be played，Where it lyes.
- If you draw your Club in order to Strike & proceed as far in the Stroke，as to be bringing down your Club If then，your Club shall break in any way，it is to be Accounted A Stroke.
- He whose Ball lyes farthest from the Hole is obliged to play first.
- Neither Trench，Ditch，nor Dyke，made for the preservation of the links，nor the Scholar’s，nor the soldier’s Lines，Shall be Accounted a Hazard，but the Ball is to be taken out，Teed，and played with any Iron Club.
このルールが決められた時代はもちろん、１４世紀ごろからランスウッド，リョクシンボク，トリネコなどの天然木でシャフトが作られており、１９３５年ごろにスチールシャフトが世に広まるまでの約５００年間で最も重宝された木材がヒッコリー（クルミの木）でした。
